Mad Hatter's Tea Party

It was truly a sight for sore eyes! A stunning day in Edinburgh with temperatures soaring. Our Mad Hatters Tea Party kicked off with Hendricks cocktails poured from teapots on the Queen's Lawn at Fettes College. Guests arrived in all their finery wearing the maddest of hats. It was a spectacular beginning to one of our finest ever events, this time a partnership with Fettes College.

As guests mingled sipping champagne and cocktails, conversation was only stilted by the appearance of a character from Wonderland. The Red Queen was angry, the Dormouse was oh so sleepy, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee were hilarious, the Caterpillar was enjoying the lazy hazy day, the White Rabbit was late of course and pretty little Alice was just lost!

The thirteen costumes, made by students from Edinburgh College of Art were simply stunning and the Fettes College drama students brought them to life beautifully. Thanks to Iain Lauder of Redpath for introducing MMT to Megan Baker, head of Costume Performance at Edinburgh College of Art. It was an inspired idea Iain had which Gemma Gray took forward on behalf of the Fettes/MMT partnership and the Fettes College drama students were fine models. Barbara Windsor, our hostess alongside Biggins, could not believe that at no point were any of the students out of character. We witnessed a remarkable performance by every single one of them.

But that was just the beginning. Alice's Wonderland was still to be revealed. As guests stepped through the looking glass they were stunned by a garden full of tables fit for a queen - and a Mad Hatters tea party. With topiary trees everywhere, studded with pink and red roses, giant tea cups brimming with enormous homemade jam tarts, red chandeliers hanging skew-whiff from the ceiling, giant keys all out of reach and lots of playing cards and big red hearts. The tablecloths were reminiscent of grass, topped with a pool of glass on which we ate, the centre piece chequered pots with a giant box ball and baby topiaries surrounding it in little red spotted pots.

Lizzie Bell excelled! It is her best to date, no doubt!

Proceedings began with an exquisite performance by ballerina Gaby Lang who danced "Alice." A fashion show followed, a Mad Hatters Costume performance. Then a Michelin Star dinner by Martin Wishart. It was to die for - interspersed by the most outstanding entertainment including former Fettesian Rosha, opera singer Catriona Clark, The Other Guys and Tenors Incognito. The highlight of the night, our guests singing their hearts out to Queen, whilst standing on their chairs spinning their table napkins. I will never forget it!

Prize draw prizes were unlocked from their safes with winning keys. Three lucky guests took home a Stephen Webster diamond cuff donated by Hamilton and Inches, a luxury holiday to Anguilla and a trip to Maranello, Italy to visit the Ferrari factory.

Martin Bayfield conducted a lively auction and this incredible evening raised over £425,000. A heartfelt thanks to all our guests for their unending generosity which will support the work of MMT and scholarships and bursaries enabling gifted children to attend the College.

PS. Not withstanding all those who donated so generously, a special thank you to
